Don't laugh, but I don't blame ya if it happens. Remember the extra 3 inches of slack? Well, I thought I'd give it another shot and avoid the mechanic shop. Just kept trying to figure out why this much slack....and.....F**K ME!! After further review of the diagram I sent you....I had the Freakin' belt routed WRONG!!! Re-routed the belt correctly and tightened the slack via the alternator. No shop required........all is fixed and running well. However, the alternator pulley is very loose, thus probably causing the belt to fall off anyway. I'll pull the alternator tomorrow and tighten or replace. Well, college football starts tonight and I will be drinkin' to celebrate this serpentine routing issue and enjoy the start of football season. Thanks for all your help!! TAKE CARE PARTNER!

I did read in all of the instructions I found that you use the alternator to give it tension. I see the image you attached. I seen that one for the 4.0 engine but a lot of them are the same through the years it just wasn't marked. Thanks for posting it. |

I took the Gates belt and went to the Dayco website and entered a comparison. I also placed the my Jeep's VIN # at the Dayco site and came up with matching belts. That means the belts are the right size and match for my vehicle (at least in theory.) I also noticed the pulley on the alternator is pretty loose. That would definitely cause some issues. The shop is very respectable and will probably not charge much due to the fact that this seems to an error on their part. Luckily, this is just a fun weekend, get away vehicle and I'm in no hurry.........just summer is almost over!! I'll get it into the shop tomorrow. Please let me know if you received the attached picture. This image seems to be the perfect routing diagram for my 4.2L I6. As I stated, just seemed extremely loose. Thanks for all your help and I'll keep you posted after I get it back from the shop and see what they have to say.

Ya, I would take it back to them if they replaced the belt when they did the work to your car. If there is that much play then the belt is probably the wrong size. There are many different sizes that are really close to each other and when I was searching through diagrams there are 4 different ones for the 1990 4.2l and I didn't even find one with AC yet.
I'll keep looking around to see if I can find one. If you could send me a picture of the front of your engine I could figure it out or even compare it to the diagrams I have found. |

Just finished major engine work last month ($1200 worth) at a reputable shop. There is only 1 belt that seems to connect all the accessory components. The belt is a a Gates Micro-V K060820. The belt just fell off while driving. Luckily only 1 mile from home. There is no damage to the serpentine belt. I'm just trying to avoid taking the jeep back to the shop and just tighten the belt myself. Belt seems to have about 3 inches of slack, thus making me wonder if there is a missing (or broken IDLER pully). There doesn't appear to be any missing parts or place to connect an extra Idler pulley. The alternator also appears to be maxed out in its tension adjustment bolt. I found a serpentine diagram from Chilton that shows all my components w/o the Idler pulley. I do believe that is the proper diagram, just wanted to get another opionion. If need be, I'll just take it back to the shop, because this is an issue that should have never happened in my opinion.

Does yours have 1 belt or 2? There are a lot of different diagrams for that year and motor. I can't seem to find one with AC though. let me know. I'll keep looking.

When viewing the 4.2L from the front, the accessory components are Crank Shaft Vibration Damper, Water Pump Pulley, Alternator, A/C, P/S. There appears to be no IDLER pulley's. Also, have another question. Without an IDLER, are the belt adjustments made from the Alternator or P/S. Haynes says to adjust from the Alternator and Chilton says from the P/S component. From my point of view, it only seems that the Alternator has an adjustment bolt vs. the P/S appears to be a fixed component w/o adjustment bolts.
